Project overview
The proposal
This project forms part of our broader Western Isthmus Water Quality Improvement Programme (WIWQIP) of works which is a joint initiative between us and Auckland Council. It's aimed at reducing wastewater overflows and improving stream and beach water quality across the city’s central western isthmus.
The project involves the construction of a 3.2km long wastewater pipeline from Canada Street in Central Auckland to the Central Interceptor tunnel by Western Springs Stadium. The wastewater then flows 13km to the Māngere Wastewater Treatment Plant for treatment and discharge.
This new ‘collector sewer’ will range in diameter between 2.4m to 4.5m and will have three branch connections. The proposed pipeline will improve the collection and conveyance of wastewater. It also aims to minimise the frequency of spills and uncontrolled overflows that currently occur in the area. These occur at existing engineered overflow points due to the ageing nature and limited capacity of the existing combined stormwater and wastewater network.
The overall goal is enhanced environmental outcomes, including a reduction in odour from stormwater catchpits and improved coastal water quality conditions. This project will also provide capacity for the future growth predicted in the catchment.
Timeline and map
Construction is estimated to take place between 2028-2031 across the works area displayed on the map below.
